Every day, millions of people across the UK are making a difference by volunteering. Each year, outstanding examples of this work are celebrated through the King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS). In November 2022 Winster Shop was honoured to be awarded the KAVS for our forty shop volunteers support to the community. In February 2023 at a special ceremony, we were presented with a certificate personally signed by the King and a crystal award, by His Majesty’s Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire Colonel John Wilson OBE.
Created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and previously known as The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS), the Award has been shining a light on the fantastic work of voluntary groups from across the UK for many years. Equivalent to an MBE, KAVS is the highest Award given to local voluntary groups in the UK, and they are awarded for life.
Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do and now is a great time to get involved as we are preparing to celebrate the shop’s 20th Anniversary in 2025. Being a part of a volunteering community is great for helping maintain healthy social and mental wellbeing. Volunteering can help you to meet new people, learn new skills and gain confidence — all while making a real difference to people’s lives!
