Community Owned Since 2005

Welcome to Winster Shop – a shop run by and for the community! We’ve been around since January 2005 when we took over the old GB Stores, and we’ve been proudly serving the village ever since, with over 20 years of history behind us!
Our goal is simple: to provide a friendly, sustainable village shop that’s owned and managed by the local community, with all profits benefiting everyone. We’re a small team, with 2 full-time staff, 4 part-time staff, and a fantastic group of over 40 local volunteers who help keep everything running smoothly. The shop’s financial and legal affairs are overseen by our dedicated Board of Directors, who are all volunteers too.
Even though we’re a small shop, we’re proud to say we’re in the top 8% of village shops across the UK, thanks to our focus on offering the best local produce. From fresh dairy, fruit, and vegetables to meats, bread, drinks, and other essentials – we’ve got everything you need, and we’re passionate about supporting local suppliers.
Winster Shop is a key part of our village community, serving not just locals, but also the many visitors, walkers, and cyclists who pass through. During the tough times of the COVID lockdowns, we were there for the community, and we were honoured to receive the King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) in 2023 for our efforts.
We’re open every single day of the year – yes, 365 days!
The shop runs thanks to the incredible work of our volunteers, who do everything from serving customers to taking care of all the behind-the-scenes tasks. They work alongside our paid staff and managers, all guided by our Volunteer Coordinator. Want to get involved? We’d love to have you! Check out our volunteer info or reach out to us, and one of our friendly team members will get in touch with you and pass your details on to Rachel, our Volunteer Coordinator.

Winster Corner
We try to offer a distinctive shopping experience: our ‘Winster Corner’ promotes local artisan products (call in and get a copy of the fascinating Village Map, for example); our unique window displays made by talented residents, are a delight, and illustrate local or national activities or events.
We welcome new ideas for products and services, recognising the need for choice – whether our customers live locally or are on holiday in Winster or the surrounding area.
Community Hub
Social Responsibility
Caring for each other is a traditional characteristic of village life and as such is an important element of the shop being at the heart of our community. In November 2023, we were delighted that the Shop was selected against intense competition, for award of the prestigious Kings Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) for its support to the community.
As a “Good Samaritan,” the Shops’ social responsibility to our community is reflected in the fact that we are open 7 days a week for 365 days of the year, providing a “Safe Place” for vulnerable people in case of emergency and as an informal help point for information and support to the community and visitors.

During the COVID epidemic the shop Volunteers provided a free shopping ordering and delivery service to less mobile and vulnerable residents, this continues today.
Defibrillator
Winster has an emergency Defibrillator, which is in a locked yellow cabinet on the wall of the shop at the top of Woodhouse Lane. The 999 service will give you the lock code, if they think you need to use the machine.
